Every message is encrypted for one person, with strong cryptography (X25519, HKDF, AES-256-GCM). Only the two phones can read it.

Can CloakFort read my messages?
No. CloakFort is end-to-end encrypted (X25519 → AES-256-GCM): the content is only ever readable on the two phones involved. What passes through our servers is always encrypted, and we have no way to open it.
How does a message fit inside a picture?
It's called steganography: the content, already encrypted, is hidden in the pixels of an image. Anyone who sees it outside the app sees a photo and nothing else; only CloakFort, with the right key, opens it again. With a text message the encrypted content goes straight to the person, and the picture stays on your phone for you to share elsewhere if you want to.
Do I need an account?
You do. Your account publishes your public key so people can send to you. There's no phone verification and no SMS codes. Your private key stays with you, on your phone.
What happens to messages over time?
They go. By default within 3 days. After that there's about another week where they can still be recovered, and then they're erased for good. Inside that window you can unlock an already-expired message for €0.29.
